Amber Rosary: February 24, 2022

My first rosary in fifty years,

honey-colored amber,

fossilized sap said to bring

sweetness, peace.

Almost before time,

these wild old pines

thrived near Babusia’s

home on the rolling edge

of water and earth,

where she would sit

with the breath of sky

and natural melodies

of resin-blood simmering

beneath furrowed bark

into this string of prayers.

Cross and beads, warm

to touch. My pulse,

a rhythmic drum.
